Australian Zoo and The Irwins

Actually we've changed our plans for today. Instead of paddling half a day and then cuddling koalas other part of the day, we've decided to do the latter for the whole day!

And that was the best move we could do. Australia Zoo it is a full day attraction only. It's not worth it to go there just for the afternoon, because you will miss the whole bunch of morning shows!!

Sunshine Coast - Yandina and Noosa

G'day everyone!
I'm in Sunshine Coast at the moment, in Yadina to be exact just 18km away from Noosa up north above Brisbane. As we have now peak of the summer holidays it was nearly impossible to find and accommodation near the beach at this time of the year. Especially in the Noosa area. As we drove around, it seems to be quite posh area with big mansions, houses and expensive cars.

Mount Tamborine - Camp in the forest

Just sitting in front of the fire in Tamborine Mountains, all of my friends went to bed and I've stayed here, minding the fire, last few bits of it. True camp experience. We are in the woods this time. There is a small river near by with few rock pools, where we had a swim earlier this afternoon. Nice and refreshing water, and most important fresh water, such a difference after few weeks of ocean.

Surfers Paradise - Really hot Christmas

There has been some storms predicted for Christmas on the Gold Coast but I think we had a miracles going here! Beautiful blue skies! We arrived here on the 23rd of December staying in Backpackers resort. Nice place full of young people mostly from Germany, France, Italy and England, there were few Irish around. Quite typical blend in here.

Byron Bay - The most eastern point of Australia

Here we are in Byron Bay. Place where number of camper vans is almost three times bigger than normal cars. Campers everywhere! Some of them apparently arrived here few years ago and never left! That's what I've noticed. You can get a very hippie vibe from this place. Young and old crowd, from backpackers to holiday makers, bikers and tourists with huge Nikon lenses are hanging around the main street and main beach. It's like European holiday destination but hippie'r (if such a word exist ;))

Coffs Harbor - First Surfing in OZ

We've arrived in Coffs just before 7pm, checked in and done small exploration of the area we went for a steak this time to the local restaurant. Very pleasant food, good music (some reggae band) which conclude our evening. In Coffs we were staying two nights. So the Monday 19/12 we had first driving free day.

Port Stephen's - First Night in the campervan

We arrived in Port Stephen's around 6 PM. Actually it's a name of the area. We were staying on the camp site near Nelson Bay. Went for local fish and chips (almost everywhere there is a chipper claiming that they are the best in the neighborhood).

Then we went for a scenic walk up the natural park to enjoy beautiful views of the bay and near beaches. As we were driving we saw signs informing us that we are entering area where koalas are present! So we went for hunting that night. Unfortunately no koalas found. However we've seen an abundance of other wild animals. Birds, spiders and plenty of strange insects ;) and then we went for first nearly sleepless night in the camper van. It was a time for adjusting and getting familiar with sleeping in the car. Rough night I tell you.

Next morning we went to the beach near Anna Bay, have a swim in the sea and then we hit the road heading towards Coffs Harbor. We got away from the highway for few km's to enjoy Lakes Way - scenic route around Smiths Lake and Wallis Lake. We came back on the high way and went straight to Coffs.

There is few things I have to say about driving in Australia. First of all every so often there is an organized resting place with toilets and water for drivers, sometimes you can get even a free cup of coffee or tea with biscuit. Good idea when you take in consideration long distances. Second thing is driving fines. It's not that I have any experience, but people are saying that for all road offences you can get heavily fined (hundreds of dollars), way more than €80 for a speeding ticket in Ireland. It seems to be working in here.

Going back to camping facilities. I have to say that this business is very developed in here. All toilets and showers in great condition, some hotels might learn something from them. On site facilities like canteen, BBQ, playgrounds and pools are very common. And it's cheap! you can find places for as little as $25 a night for a site. I really like this way of traveling around. It gives you a lot of freedom. You can pick and choose what ever you like to see and where to go and how long you want to stay there!
